Life skill: How to Open a Coconut

By Emerald Morgia

I’m turning 39 next month. I’m celebrating it having a grateful heart. The first thing I’m thankful for: lifeskills.

Life skills are often underrated but are very important.

One can buy a young coconut for P25 in the Philippines. The vendor can open it for you. To buy a young a coconut, one has to travel at least 10-30 minutes from where I am.

Since my mother-in-law sent me coconuts from her farm, I only have to open it. It saved me money and time. I also get to show my children how to do it.

Young coconuts bring back happy memories from my childhood. It’s fun time for my cousins and I. I’ve always envied my older cousins who knew how to climb the coconut trees and really be on top of it to get the coconuts. I know how to climb trees but I have never conquered a tall coconut tree. I’ve tried and tried but never get to the top (I was around 7). I realized now that I needed a strong upper body strength to do that. I should have hacked away at young coconuts first to increase my strength. I’m glad I learned to open a coconut though.
