Derek Prince: The Grandfather I wish I had
Today, I bawled over a memorial service of a person who I’ve never met in person: Derek Prince. The memorial service was posted on Youtube six years ago. I cried for a lot of reasons. One of which is the realization that I’d never get to meet him in this lifetime.
Let me tell you how I came across him in the digital world. I was at the lowest point of my life at that time. I was looking for a sermon to comfort me. I knew I should be reading the Bible but I guess I was too spiritually sick. You know, a spiritually sick person has no appetite for the Word.
I simply want to have a few of my questions answered. I listened to the celebrated preachers of 2020. I still have that yearning for more.
I came across one of Derek Prince’s sermons on fasting. His video looks out of date (you know that feeling when you look at an old photo and you know it’s old just by the looks of the people in it?). He looks out of date. His voice doesn’t have the same dynamics as the modern preachers. His facial expression doesn’t change. He certainly doesn’t move as much too. But the way he presented the Word of God satisfied my hunger and my thirst. The Word of God certainly does not go out of date. The Bible is “true, relevant, and up-to-date book” and Derek Prince’s sermon has given me a key.
- What is fasting?
- How does one fast or what is the proper way of fasting?
- What does fasting do in the spiritual realm?
- Is Biblical fasting still practical in our modern world?
After the first sermon, I began to google him. Oh, so he has a respectable education, that is in a worldly standard. Let me list them.
- He was a scholar of Greek and Latin at Eton College and Cambridge University.
- He held a Fellowship in Ancient and Modern Philosophy at King’s College.
- He studied Hebrew and Aramaic at Cambridge University.
- He pursued to study more of Hebrew and Aramaic in Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
- He can read the Bible in its original text.
All of which were very impressive. He brought with him the Bible while he was serving the British army in World War II, not because he was a religious man but because he was curious. It’s the book he has not read so far and he wants to understand the book as a scholar. I guess the war and the Bible changed the course of his life. It also changed the millions of lives who have heard his sermon.
His sermons do not only tell you about the truth, but he also tells you practical ways use the truth. For him, if it’s not true in the physical, then it must not be spiritual.
His sermons are posted on Youtube for free. But if you really want to savor the meat of his sermons, you can also buy his books from amazon.com.
I will be posting an individual book review of his books. This article intends to showcase all the books Derek Prince published. You can follow this link.
